We
spent some time scouting this morning. High up on
Chama Peak we started hearing bugles and were fortunate
enough to spot 9 mature bulls before 8:00 a.m. We
also saw a few nice mule deer bucks in velvet. A
special treat was to see several fights break out
among the bulls. The fighting along with the bugling
are great signs that the rut is going to be long
and intense. Here are some scenery shots from the
morning:

This
morning we did a little scouting and some chores.
Below you can see a major wallow and natural mineral
lick where we placed a tree stand. This place is
amazing with 9 major game trails coming into from
all sides.

This
year we undertook a new project. For several years
we have been frustrated by a herd of elk that would
escape to an area high above some cliffs. After studying
the maps, we realized that we could access the area
from a spike camp and catch the bulls as they were
coming back to bed. We subsequently cut a trail through
some very rough country that included several chasms
a few hundred feet deep. Here are a few pictures
from the trip:

Here
are some of the guys getting ready to pack the spike
camp to the high country.
One
of the chasms our new trail crosses to access some great
hunting terrain that has been unhunted for decades.
